Contact Lens Fittings
Fitting for daily, monthly, toric, multifocal and specialty lenses, including teaching and aftercare.
A contact lens fitting is a measurement exercise, a teaching session and a follow-up plan. Getting the first right without the other two produces lenses that work in the consulting room and nowhere else.
The assessment
The optometrist measures the curvature and diameter of the cornea, assesses the tear film and looks at the lids and the front of the eye. Alongside that is a conversation about how you intend to wear the lenses — every day, at weekends, for sport, for work — because that changes which material and replacement schedule make sense.
Lens types we fit
- Daily disposables, for occasional or convenient wear
- Monthly and two-weekly replacements
- Toric lenses for astigmatism
- Multifocal lenses for presbyopia
- Specialty fits, including lenses for irregular corneas
Teaching and aftercare
Nobody leaves with lenses they cannot get in and out on their own. The teaching session covers insertion, removal, cleaning and what to do if a lens will not come out. It takes as long as it takes, and a second session is not unusual.
Aftercare appointments check the fit and the health of the eye. They are also the point at which most people change lens type — comfort at the end of a long day is a legitimate reason to try something else, and we would rather you told us than gave up.
Frequently asked
In most cases yes. Toric lenses are made to sit in a particular orientation on the eye, and the fitting checks that they do so consistently. It takes a little longer to get right than a spherical fit.
Allow about an hour for the assessment and the first lenses, and a separate teaching session for handling. A follow-up a week or two later checks how the lenses have settled.
Often, with the right material and wearing schedule, and sometimes after treating the dryness first. The fitting includes a tear film assessment for this reason.
A contact lens fitting is a different assessment from a sight test and is usually booked separately. Reception will explain what each appointment covers when you book.
