Pediatric Eye Care
Eye care for children, in appointments built around how young patients actually behave in a clinic room.

Children are not small adults, and a pediatric appointment is not a shortened version of an adult one. It is arranged differently, uses different tests, and takes as long as the child allows.
The clinician usually starts by letting the child look around the room and hold one of the instruments. The tests that need the most cooperation are done first, while attention is at its best, and the objective measurements — which need nothing from the child at all — are kept for whenever they are possible.
Picture charts, matching cards and letter charts are used according to age. Retinoscopy establishes a prescription without the child having to say which lens is clearer, which is why a reliable result is possible long before a child can read.
Bring a favorite toy, and pick a time of day when your child is usually at their best. If drops are needed the pupils stay large and light-sensitive for several hours, so a bright afternoon out afterwards is not the plan to make.
Vision develops through childhood, so a check that is normal now does not settle the question forever. The clinician will suggest when to come back.
Younger than most parents expect. Testing does not depend on a child being able to read — there are picture charts, matching tests and objective techniques that need no response at all.
That is normal and the clinic is set up for it. Much of what we need can be measured objectively, and an appointment that does not finish can be picked up at another. Nobody is going to be cross with your child.
Sometimes. Cycloplegic drops relax the focusing muscle so the true prescription can be measured, which matters more in children than in adults. If they are needed, we will tell you in advance so you can plan the day.
Sitting close to screens, squinting, covering one eye, headaches, or a marked change in reading are all worth a check. So is a family history of squint or a strong prescription, even with no symptoms.
The clinic has orthoptic input for eye movement and binocular vision problems, and works with pediatric ophthalmology where a surgical opinion is needed.
